Watch Live TV on Roku

Plex gives Roku Live TV support

Plex announced today that the company began supporting Live TV on Roku.

Now Plex Pass subscribers can add a TV antenna and a tuner like HDHomeRun to live stream local television channels to their Roku devices.

Plex Pass subscribers with the Roku preview channel installed can now use Roku to watch free HDTV digital broadcast channels. The new Roku support is in beta, but will be released to all Plex Pass subscribers in about a week. Having Plex’s Live TV support on Roku gives you the ability to pause, resume, and skip around within the show, making it easier for cord cutters to enjoy free over-the-air broadcast channels.

By getting network channels like NBC, FOX, ABC and PBS, viewers have free access to local news and sports across their devices.

Roku is one of the most popular streaming devices among Plex’s 14 million users.

Users cannot yet schedule recordings through Plex DVR on Roku devices, but can watch recordings from other supported platforms. That includes Web, Android (mobile), Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, and iOS devices on their Roku.

The expansion comes roughly a month after the company upgraded its Fire TV app so users could watch and DVR local over-the-air (OTA) channels.  Plex Live TV is now available on Roku, Plex Web, Amazon Fire TV, Android (mobile), Android TV, Apple TV, and iOS devices.

Plex News

Plex also recently launched a new video news service called “Plex News.” The feature now serves up important and personalized streaming news content from national, international and local news sources through 190 providers.

That number is expecting to grow and already includes CBS News, CNN, A+J, IGN, Cheddar and Mic. Plex News is free and requires no subscription, no hefty setup, and no Plex Media Server setup.

After using Plex News for a couple of weeks, I noticed a couple of big benefits that I wasn’t getting with my OTA channels.

Plex News was bringing in news feeds from a channel in a neighboring state (New Hampshire), which I wasn’t getting on my antenna. That was pretty nice since I used to live there, and like to keep tabs on what’s happening from time to time.

I noticed that I was getting a better lineup of local news where I live in Boston. It spared me from having to channel flip or sit through an entire hour of one local news station.

Plex News is currently available on Android TV, Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, Android mobile, and iOS, with other platforms to follow.
