Mohu AirWave available at Best Buy: Roku, Apple TV and Fire TV are first to get app support
The Mohu AirWave went on sale on Monday night exclusively at Best Buy for $149.
The antenna is a first for Mohu. It functions as a wireless indoor antenna that captures over-the-air (OTA) high definition broadcasts and transmits them across your wireless network.
Customers who signed up for an email notification about the AirWave were alerted on Monday night about the antenna going on sale.
For now, the Mohu Airwave works with Roku, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV devices, according to a page on Mohu’s website.
Support of iOS devices, Android and Smart TVs is expected to come soon, according to Mohu. This means that you will eventually be able to stream OTA television to iPhones and Android smartphones. That’s a feature that until recently have been almost exclusive to tuners like HDHomeRun or Tablo DVRs.
Mohu TV app supplies 14-day channel guide
Users connect the antenna through the Mohu TV app, which also serves as a portal for live local channels.
The Mohu TV app connects wirelessly to the AirWave and filters the local channels into a cable-like TV guide, according to the Mohu. The format will allow users to channel surf through live broadcast channels and free streaming content.
OTA content captured by the AirWave can also be streamed to a PC. The new cable-style program guide on AirWave will give program descriptions, the ability to select favorite channels, and view up to 14 days of upcoming content.
Mohu says the AirWave system uses ClearPixTM Technology, a proprietary, first-of-its-kind dynamic pixelation reduction technology. ClearPix is designed to automatically improve image reception of over-the-air broadcasts.
The release came about a month later than expected. The Airwave was initially believed to hit the shelves by Labor Day.
I plan to review the AirWave soon. Recently, I reviewed a competing product called ClearStream TV from AntennasDirect. I liked its interface with Roku the best, but thought overall that it had some room to improve.
You can take a closer look at the Mohu AirWave on the Best Buy website.
