With traditional cable and satellite services becoming more expensive, viewers are turning to alternatives like Fubo, a choice that’s growing in popularity among sports fans.

Fubo, once known as “fuboTV”, now has more than 1.5 million paying subscribers, as of the first quarter of 2024, up 18 percent year over year.

It is often described as a sports-focused streaming service, but my percentage breakdown tells a more nuanced story. Fubo has played the role of underdog in the live TV streaming landscape, but has carved itself out as a fierce competitor to larger platforms, including YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV and DIRECTV STREAM.

Fubo distinguishes itself by having one of the widest range of regional sports networks (RSNs) among live TV streaming services. Its entry-level channel lineup in the Pro plan is huge, with roughly 193 channels, for $79.99 per month.

Subscribers get unlimited Cloud DVR, up to six profiles, and can watch TV on 10 screens simultaneously. Fubo lets customers upgrade its channel lineup with two other plans called Elite and Premier. There are smaller add-ons that let customers get more sports or entertainment channels for an additional monthly fee. I have been a paying subscriber to Fubo on and off since 2017.

This guide will help you understand Fubo’s channels, including locals, sports networks and features like 4K streaming offered within the Fubo app.

What is Fubo?

Fubo is a live TV streaming service that’s often described as a sports-focused streaming service. However, by my count, sports does not tell the full story of the channel lineup.

While the entry-level Pro plan has an impressive number of about 42 sports networks in the Pro plan, that only represents about 21.7 percent of the overall lineup. This number does not include Regional Sports Networks (RSNs), which vary by market.

There are about 65 entertainment channels, 12 news, and three weather channels, 15 broadcast networks and 16 other channels. Fubo, like popular services like YouTube TV, is an over-the-top (OTT) streaming service or a multichannel video programming distributor (MVPD).

All your live TV channels, recordings and on-demand library are found within the Fubo app.

Fubo Plans and Pricing

Fubo offers three main channel bundles: Pro, Elite and Premier. All channels start with a “base” of 174 channels, which are enhanced with local broadcast channels, RSNs, and add-ons, depending upon your subscription.

All Fubo plans are subject to a RSN fee. Subscribers with one RSN in their channel lineup are billed an additional $11.99 per month, For more than one RSN, the fee is $14.99 per month.

Pro, Elite and Premier plans start with 174 “base” channels. However, the exact lineup can vary, especially due to RSNs and local broadcast channels, which are specific to individual TV markets.

Other channels, such as Big Ten Network, may offer multiple live feeds. One area may offer more local broadcast channels or regional sports channels than others. As of July 2024, the Pro lineup has 194 channels.

Recent changes to channel lineup

If you’re wondering what channels are not on Fubo, here is your breakdown on the latest:

On May 1, 2024, Fubo dropped 17 Discovery channels owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, including HGTV, Animal Planet and Food Network.

The streamer announced in December 2022 that it no longer carries AMC Networks, including AMC, AMC Premiere, BBC America, BBC World News, IFC, WEtv and Sundance.

Currently, Fubo does not carry A&E, AMC, AMC Premier, BBC America, BBC World News, El Gourmet, IFC, fyi, Lifetime, Lifetime Movie Network, Mas Chic, Vice TV, WEtv, Sundance TV, Boomerang, Cartoon Network (Adult Swim), CNN, CNN International, CNN en Español, History, HLN, Lifetime, Lifetime Movie Network, NBCSN, TBS, TNT, truTV and Turner Classic Movies (TCM).

A+E Networks released a statement about no longer being on Fubo, citing a failure to reach an agreement with the streamer. NBCSN is no longer on Fubo or other TV providers because the network was shut down by its parent company.

Broadcast and cable TV channels can come and go from cable TV lineups and live TV streaming services.

Sports Channels on Fubo

For golf fans, the Golf Channel provides in-depth coverage of PGA Tour events and exclusive golf programming from NBC Sports. Soccer coverage comes from beIN Sports, beIN Sports LaLiga, and TUDN, which bring you top-tier soccer leagues and tournaments from around the world.

In addition to these, the Fubo Pro plan includes specialty channels like the NFL Network, Lacrosse Sports Network, and Pickleball TV, catering to more specific sports interests. These channels offer dedicated content and exclusive access to events that you won’t find elsewhere.

For those wanting even more sports content, Fubo offers the Sports Plus add-on bundle, which expands your options with additional channels and exclusive coverage, enhancing your overall viewing experience.

Regional Sports Networks on Fubo

Fubo has a robust lineup of regional sports networks (RSNs) that are included in Pro, Elite and Premier plans. These RSNs carry local, in-market MLB, NBA or NHL games. In December 2022, Fubo announced an agreement with Sinclair Broadcast Group to carry 19 of the regional Bally Sports channels.

There are a few caveats with Fubo’s RSN lineup. As mentioned earlier, the RSN fee in your plan will depend on where you live. Marquee Sports Network is available nationally, but only in-market subscribers can watch live Chicago Cubs games during Major League Baseball season. The rest of the U.S. are subject to blackouts.

Viewers in most markets have access to major broadcast networks through Fubo, along with a variety of regional and independent channels.

Fubo Extra add-on

The Fubo Extra add-on package includes 65 channels giving subscribers more options for sports, entertainment, news and family cable networks. It usually costs $7.99 per month.

Sports fans get 11 additional sports channels with Fubo Extra. With channels like ACC Network (National), ESPNews, ESPNU, MLB Network, NBA TV, NHL Network, and SEC Network (National), subscribers gain access to a wealth of live sports coverage and analysis.

There are 30 entertainment channels dedicated to movies, music, and general entertainment – Channels like BET Her, FXM, MTV Classic, Nat Geo Wild, and TeenNick.

The package also includes niche channels that cater to specific interests. True crime and reality TV aficionados will appreciate channels like Crime and Punishment, Confess by Nosey, and True Crime Now, which offer gripping real-life stories and investigative shows.

What channels are 4K on fubo?

Fubo has 4K support for live sporting events on Big Ten Network, FOX, FS1 and NBC Sports. The company maintains a 4K schedule for upcoming sports.

4K support used to be available in the Pro plan, but that changed in 2022. Only the Elite plan and Premier plan have 4K programming. You will need a 4K television, and a streaming device that supports 4K to benefit from the upscaled resolution. Fubo says that some 4K programming may require that your TV or display supports HDR10.

It’s important to note that broadcasters are providing upscaled 4K resolution, so it’s not native 4K resolution.

fubo is the first live TV streaming service to offer 4K HDR video with the 2018 World Cup. But they are no longer the only game in town. Sling TV just added live 4K programming to FOX, USA Network and announced plans to expand its number of 4K channels free of charge.

YouTube TV offers a “4K Plus” add-on for $9.99 per month that can be added to the Base plan. YouTube TV’s Base plan is $72.99 per month.

Profiles, simultaneous streams

Similar to YouTube TV, fubo allows subscribers to create up to six profiles per account. The option allows up to six people in your household to have their own library of recordings, favorite channels and series that they can follow.

Pro, Elite and Premier subscribers can watch on up to 10 screens on supported TVs and devices.

fubo began testing out offering more simultaneous streams within the Pro plan in 2021, when it increased the Family Share option that allowed three streams at a time.

How to watch Fubo on Smart TVs

A number of Smart TVs support the Fubo app. Here is how to get start watching Fubo on your Smart TV:

1) Search for the Fubo app within the app or channel store on your Smart TV.

2) Once the app is downloaded, use your Fubo account to sign in with a username and password. (You can sign up for a free 7-day trial online beforehand if you don’t already have an account.)

3) If your Smart TV doesn’t support the Fubo app, plug in a streaming device that supports the Fubo to a HDMI port on the television.

You can cast Fubo’s mobile app to any Smart TV that supports Chromecast.

Fubo DVR

All Fubo plans in the U.S. come with unlimited hours of Cloud DVR space. You don’t need any DVR hardware to record movies, TV shows or sporting events. Fubo is storing your recordings for you on their servers.

You can set up a recording under the Guide, Shows or Movie tabs. Navigate to the program you want to record and press the ‘OK’ button on the remote control. A window will appear on the right hand side of the screen. Select ‘Recording options’ and choose whether to record a single episode or a whole series.

Your saved programs are in the “My Stuff” tab, where you can manage your recordings, and delete what you don’t want.

Fubo comparisons

Pricing and channel lineups are two of the biggest differences when comparing Fubo to its competitors.

YouTube TV has 128 live TV channels in the Base plan, unlimited Cloud DVR and allows for six profiles within a household. YouTube’s live TV service has local broadcast channels, cable sports channels and some RSNs such as NBC Sports. A subscription costs $72.99 per month. YouTube TV still offers a free 7-day trial.

By comparison, Fubo has more channels in its Pro plan, and a wider variety of RSNs, but comes at a higher price when you add in the RSN fee.

Hulu Live TV has more than 90 TV channels, unlimited DVR and ad-supported versions of Disney+ and ESPN+. A subscription is $76.99 per month. Hulu Live carries the entire ESPN family of networks, local broadcast channels (including PBS) and regional NBC Sports channels.

By comparison, Hulu Live TV drives a lot of value with the addition of ESPN+ and Disney+ compared to Fubo, especially given its lower price point.

Sling TV remains a good budget option at $40 and carries ESPN and NFL Network, but in two different packages. If you wanted both networks, you would pay $55 per month. Sling TV carries NBC and FOX in a limited number of markets, and no regional sports networks.

By comparison, Sling TV offers a great value for a sports fan who only needs ESPN or the RSNs offered by Fubo.

DIRECTV STREAM has more than 75 channels in its Entertainment package. A subscription costs $79.99 per month. But for regional sports channels, you need the Choice bundle. The Choice plan is $108.99 per month. DIRECTV STREAM offers a free 5-day trial.

By comparison, Fubo offers a greater number of channels in its entry-level plan; however the cost is higher due to the RSN fee. DIRECTV STREAM costs more than Fubo if you want RSN coverage.

Fubo free trial

Fubo offers a free 7-day trial for new customers. When you sign up for a Fubo subscription, you automatically get a free trial. You just need an email account, and provide either debit or credit card information.

If you go beyond the free trial period, expect to get billed. When you cancel before the free trial ends, your access to live TV ends. You only get one free trial per account.

How to cancel Fubo

The easiest way to cancel is by doing it online when you are sitting in front of a computer. Sign in to your Fubo account, and select the profile of the account owner. Under the “My Account” tab, you can find the option to cancel your subscription.

Does Fubo charge any fees?

Fubo charges a regional sports fee if you live in any part of the U.S. that carries a regional sports network such as Bally Sports, NESN or NBC Sports. If your channel lineup has one regional sports network, you will be charged an additional $11.99 per month.

For two or more regional sports networks, you will be charged $14.99 per month.

Does Fubo have ESPN+?

Fubo does not offer ESPN+ as an add-on streaming service. Fubo subscribers get a number of live ESPN networks, and you can activate the ESPN app for TV Everywhere access for live and on-demand programs.

Are Fubo channels in HD?

Fubo streams in High Definition with 720p and 1080p resolution. Elite and Premier subscribers get select 4K programming that is upscaled from 1080p. Fubo recommends having an Internet download speed of 20Mbps to ensure the best picture resolution.

How to watch multiple games on Fubo

All Fubo plans currently allow you to have 10 simultaneous streams in a household. But if you want multiple games on a single TV, then you will need an Apple TV and enable Multiview.

With Multiview on Apple TV, you can watch up to four live channels at the same time on one screen.

When you are watching a TV channel, press the touchpad and select “Watch in Multiview.” You can swipe right or left to pick a second channel.
