The Best Sports Streaming Services in 2023

By Jim Kimble / Updated January 9, 2023

Live sports keeps us glued to our televisions on any given day of the week. But streaming services that offer live sports coverage are still in their early days.

Here are 10 services worth considering to stream live sports, and some up-and-coming services that might be worth your hard earned dollars in 2023.

  1. YouTube TV
  2. Hulu
  3. DIRECTV STREAM
  4. fuboTV
  5. Sling TV
  6. Paramount Plus
  7. ESPN Plus
  8. Peacock
  9. Amazon Prime Video
  10. Fanatiz

Sling TV, Hulu Live TV and fuboTV have been among the first generation of sports streaming options that broke the cable TV bundle.

These streaming platforms offer ESPN and even some regional sports networks that air in-market and out-of-market MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL games. Their pricing is often less, or at least more flexible, than a cable or satellite service.

International soccer, college football, golf, tennis and UFC fights are on smaller, but growing sports streaming services.

How The Best Sports Streaming Services Were Picked

Since 2016, I have subscribed to every streaming service on this list at one time or another.

I have used streaming services and over-the-air channels to watch seasons of professional sports such as MLB, NHL and NBA. I still pay for subscriptions to about a half dozen of the streaming services chosen for this list.

Every live TV streaming service offers different sports and leagues. So these 10 streaming services aren’t ranked against each other. Instead, they are judged by price, content offerings and overall value when compared to a cable TV or satellite package.

I considered the availability of local channels, regional sports networks and cable TV channels such as ESPN.

I looked at whether a sports add-on (which costs extra) was required for the best experience, and if extras such as Cloud DVR storage were included in the service. Streaming services that were ad-free were also compared to platforms that ran with no ads.

(The first streaming service I used that streamed live sports was PlayStation Vue. It was the first live TV streaming service to offer NESN in the New England region. Eventually, the price increased for PS Vue before it fizzled out.)

YouTube TV

YouTube TV is streaming a number of top sports channels in its entry-level channel bundle.

A subscription to the Base plan costs $64.99 per month, and carries local ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX stations across the U.S.

ACC Network, Big Ten Network, SEC Network, ESPN, ESPN2, Golf Channel, MLB Network, NBA TV, NFL Network, TBS and TNT are included in the base channel plan.

The YouTube Base plan lets you watch live TV on three screens at once.

The advantages of YouTube TV are twofold. It has across-the-board coverage for NFL and college football games in just about every corner of the U.S.

YouTube TV also has an intuitive menu and unlimited Cloud DVR that even my non-tech savvy parents quickly learned to use after I helped them cut the cord from their pricey cable TV subscription.

The downside is that YouTube TV lacks some sports channels, including NHL Network and PAC 12 Network. It also doesn’t have regional sports networks needed for MLB and NBA such as Bally Sports, NESN, ROOT Sports Northwest and YES Network.

YouTube TV does give you the option of adding NBA League Pass ($14.99/mo) and MLB.TV ($29.99/yr) for an entire season.

YouTube 4K Sports

YouTube TV subscribers can add the 4K Plus add-on to watch select live and on-demand sporting events in 4K picture resolution. A subscription costs $19.99 per month.

You don’t get extra channels with 4K Plus, but you do get improved picture resolution from supported programs and extra perks. 4K Plus allows unlimited streams at home and the ability to view DVR recordings offline on a mobile device.

The 4K add-on is supported by ESPN, FOX Sports, NBC Sports and MLB Network. (You need a 4K television and 4K supported streaming device if you are not already using your Smart TV software to watch YouTube TV.)

YouTube TV has apps on Roku, Amazon Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Google Chromecast, and Smart TVs powered by Android TV and Google TV.

Hulu Live TV offers a few different ways to stream live sports, including access to ESPN Plus and the option of a Sports Add-on bundle.

A subscription to just Hulu Live TV has over 75 live TV channels. ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNews, FS1, FS2, TBS and TNT are part of the live TV package.

There are a number of other key channels that cover NCAA football and basketball. ACC Network, Big Ten Network, and CBS Sports Network are included in the channel lineup.

Local NBC, CBS, FOX and ABC stations are available in most of the U.S.

Hulu Live TV stands out as one of the best live TV services if you need cable channels to watch NFL, college basketball or college football.

Subscribers get unlimited Cloud DVR. You can watch live TV on two screens at once. A subscription costs $69.99 per month.

ESPN Plus is now also included with a Hulu Live TV subscription. So if you are interested in specific matchups in the Big 12 or Big South, getting Hulu Live TV might make the most sense this season.

ESPN Plus also carries the PGA Tour, UFC Fights, daily MLB and NHL games. Soccer leagues such as La Liga and MLS are on ESPN Plus as well. Subscribers to Hulu Live can also activate the ESPN app to watch ESPN3 live.

Hulu Live TV does offer a Sports Add-on bundle that costs $9.99 per month and has six channels. NFL RedZone, FanDuel TV, FanDuel Racing, MATV (Motorsports Network), Outdoor Channel and Sportsman Channel.

Subscribers also get Hulu’s full on-demand catalog and Disney+.

Hulu Live does have regional NBC Sports networks, but lacks other regional sports networks such as Bally Sports, AT&T SportsNet, NESN and ROOT Sports. It is also missing MLB Network, NBA TV, and NHL Network.

You look over which regional sports channels are included in the lineup before making any decisions.

There is currently no free trial for Hulu Live TV. New and returning subscribers now get $20 off for the first three months of service. The offer is valid until Oct. 5, 2022.

The Choice plan usually costs $99.99 per month.

The upshot of DIRECTV STREAM is pretty straightforward. The service has just about any channel you would want for watching sports. The con here is that outside of any promotion pricing, it cost more than competing live TV streaming services.

Up-and-coming Sports Streaming Services

Streaming sports, especially live games of major franchises and leagues, is still in its infancy.

Broadcast and streaming rights to games are generally tied up for years on end. And networks and sports leagues alike do not want to completely abandon cable TV while live games continue to bring in profits.

That said, there are a few streaming services that are worth keeping an eye on in the next few years as more sports rights become available to the world of streaming.

  • Apple TV+ offered weekly “Friday Night Baseball” games as part of a deal with the MLB. These games were free during the 2022 season. It remains to be seen if that remains the case in 2023. A subscription to Apple TV+ is currently $6.99 per month.
  • DAZN is one of the most expensive sports streaming services at $19.99 per month. Beyond MMA fights, there isn’t much else worth watching if you are subscribing in the U.S. Cricket, fishing and darts competitions are also on the service. If you decide to watch a pay-per-view MMA fight, you have to pay more.

Sports fans shouldn’t expect the limited amount of sports offered on DAZN to last. With former ESPN president John Skipper now at DAZN’s helm as executive chairman, DAZN could be competing with the bigger dogs now ruling the rights to major sporting events within the next few years.

  • NFL+ is the new streaming service that allows fans to watch local, in-market games on a smartphone or tablet. A subscription costs $4.99 per month. Some have screamed foul over the death of Yahoo Sports, which offered a similar service for free. But NFL+ will broaden its offerings in the years ahead with more ways to watch your local football team.
  • NESN 360 deserves a lot of praise as the first regional sports network in the U.S. to offer a standalone subscription. But $30 per month is a high price for in-market Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins games. I subscribed to NESN360 when it debuted, but didn’t keep it due to the price.
  • Bally Sports Plus is a standalone streaming service offers some key regional sports networks for NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball fans. Bally Sports RSNs will be available on fuboTV for the 2023 MLB season, and remain on DIRECTV STREAM. Bally Sports Plus will be available for $19.99 per month, or $189.99 per year.

Streaming sports FAQ

Below are more questions that readers often ask when it comes to finding a streaming service for sports.

Are there TV streaming services just for sports?

There are currently more streaming services that offer sports coverage than dedicated sports streaming services. Standalone sports streaming services include ESPN Plus, DAZN, NFL Plus, Bally Sports Plus, NESN 360, and fanatiz.

What are the advantages of sports streaming services?

The advantages of sports streaming services are flexibility and cost. Most streaming services require no long term contract so you can subscribe on a month-to-month basis, and cancel whenever you like.

Most streaming services with dedicated sports programming go for a price that’s lower than a $100-per-month cable bill, and have features like Cloud DVR or replays.

How much do sports streaming services cost?

Sports streaming services have a pretty wide range in price, and it depends on what you want to watch. NFL+, Paramount Plus and Peacock are at the lower end of the price range at $4.99 per month. In the higher range, DIRECTV STREAM has national, local and regional sports channels for $89.99 per month.

Do any streaming services have NBC Sports?

Peacock streams live sports that air on NBC. Regional NBC Sports networks are on Hulu Live TV, fuboTV, YouTube TV and DIRECTV STREAM.

Is AT&T Sports available on any streaming service?

You can watch regional AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain and AT&T SportsNet Southwest on live TV streaming services. DIRECTV STREAM, fuboTV and YouTube TV offer coverage for some of these channels.

What streaming service has ABC sports?

You can watch sports broadcast on ABC through DIRECTV STREAM, Hulu Live TV, and fuboTV. Some sports airing on ABC may also be simulcast on ESPN3 within the ESPN app.

Is CBS sports on a streaming service?

Some live sports including NFL football and UEFA Champions that air on CBS or CBS Sports Network are available on Paramount Plus. Paramount Plus has two plans that offer different levels of access to live sports.

What streaming service has FOX Sports and ESPN?

ESPN, FS1 and FS2 are available on DIRECTV STREAM, fuboTV, Hulu Live TV, Sling TV, Vidgo and YouTube TV.

What streaming service has Bally Sports?

Regional Bally Sports networks are available on DIRECTV STREAM under the Choice channel bundle. You can also subscribe to Bally Sports Plus, a new streaming service that carries regional sports networks across the U.S. for $19.99 per month.

Which streaming service has sports for free?

Want a simple way to watch sports for free? You don’t need a streaming service or internet connection to watch many NFL, NHL, soccer and MLB games for free.

You do need a TV antenna, which can deliver local broadcast channels such as ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC.

It takes a little homework figuring out what kind of TV antenna works best for your home. Once you get your antenna set up, you will be amazed that you used to pay cable or another streaming service.

You can already get NCAA football and most NFL games for free with a TV antenna. March Madness games on CBS are free to antenna users.

Notre Dame games are on NBC. ABC also has some ACC and American division games.

Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-12 football games are already on ABC and FOX. Starting in 2023, a new seven-year deal will expand the number of Big Ten football and basketball games on CBS, FOX and NBC.

You get lots of free sports and TV shows year round without paying for a TV provider or internet service.
