Amazon Prime Day is one of the best days of the year to delve into cord cutting.
These Prime Day deals should help you start saving money right away. That’s because lots of the gear you’ll need to get rid a cable TV subscription will be drastically marked down for Prime Day.
The average cable TV bill in the U.S. is a little more than $1237 per year, according to Leitchman Research Group. Prime Day 2018 is pricing hardware like TV antennas, streaming devices and cable modems at super low prices.
Getting rid of your expensive cable or satellite TV subscription will save you hundreds of dollars per year. And once you start making the most of Netflix, Hulu and dozens of other streaming services, you’ll realize that the quality of programming is actually better.
This guide is highlighting some Prime Day deals that are significant for cord cutters that use all kinds of equipment to watch or stream. Whether you watch on your TV, smartphone – indoors or outdoors – there’s hopefully going to be something you might find useful here.
If you’re just starting out with cutting the cord, here some Prime Day deals on equipment that you’ll want to get going. Be sure to check out my comprehensive Cord Cutting 2018: The Definitive Guide for more help.
When is Prime Day?
Amazon Prime Day is actually a two-day, 36 hour event this year. It starts Monday, July 16 at 3 p.m. and continues around the clock until Wednesday, July 18 at 3 a.m. ET.
NVIDIA SHIELD: Best 4K Streamer on sale for $139 on Prime Day
NVIDIA Shield TV
Between Sunday, July 15 and Saturday, July 21, SHIELD TV (with remote and controller) will be on sale for $179. That’s $20 off the regular price. This promotion will be available at Amazon, Best Buy, and the SHIELD Store and most retailers where SHIELD is sold.
If you end up buying a Shield TV through Best Buy, there’s an added bonus. Best Buy is offering a Rocketfish Ultra-Thin HDTV antenna free with SHIELD TV (remote or remote + controller).
Simply add a SHIELD to your cart and the antenna and a 30 day Sling TV trial will be added automatically. Would-be cord cutters will still need a tuner, but it’s a pretty good start.
Will Fire TV Cube go on sale for Prime Day?
The Fire TV Cube
But if you get the Fire TV Cube bundled with the Cloud Cam Security Camera, then the two are priced at $200. The perk is that you can use your voice to order the Fire TV Cube to check on another room in your home. Say, “Alexa, show the baby’s room” and you’ll get a 1080p camera feed on your TV.
The Amazon Fire TV Stick is on sale for $19.99 for Prime Day. It’s probably one of the better Prime Day deals out there for an entry-level streaming device. If you need an inexpensive 4K HDR streaming device, the Fire TV Pendant shaped streamer is $34.99. That’s $35 off the regular price.
Roku Streaming Stick is $35 on Prime Day
The Roku Streaming Stick
My favorite model, the Roku Streaming Stick+
Amazon Echo Dot for $35 (Usually $50)
If you’re someone who is adding voice commands to your cord cutting setup, Amazon has already marked down the Echo Dot
The Echo Dots are frequently purchased and paired with Harmony Hub remotes
Get a TV antenna on Prime Day
You’ll want a TV to get free local channels like NBC, CBS, ABC and PBS. Buy an antenna and you’ll essentially get TV antennas for life. I spent a year testing various antennas, and came up with what I believe are the best indoor TV antennas. This may not be a Prime Day deal per se, but it’s a significant markdown on a great antenna.
ClearStream 4MAX TV Antenna
Prime Day Deals 2018: Buy your own cable modem
TP-Link TC-7610 DOCSIS 3.0 (8×4) Cable Modem, Usually $59.99/Now $41.21. The TP-Link TC-7610 is certified for Comcast Xfinity, Spectrum and Cox so you can stream lots of great programming without having to pay upwards of $8 to $11 per month for a cable modem rental. Many readers also tell me that their internet speed dramatically improves once they start using their own cable modem. (Mine did, too.)
With max download speeds of 343Mbps, the TP-Link TC7610 will give you plenty of streaming and gaming power in your household.
What TVs are on sale for Prime Day?
So far, the best deal on a cord-cutting ready TV is the 50″ Toshiba Fire TV Edition television for $289.99. This TV is the new 2018 model that debuted a few weeks ago.
These televisions operate with the Fire TV software that you have with a Fire TV streaming device, but there’s an added feature that only the TVs have. You can get your antenna channels in the same menu alongside all of your Fire TV content. The 43″ version of the Toshiba Fire TV Edition television is on sale for $299.99, and the 55-inch model is $449.99.
It’s uncertain whether TCL will be dropping prices at all for Prime Day. A lot of people will be keeping their eyes on the new 6-Series 4K HDR TV
Stream Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and dozens of other streaming apps from the TCL 32-inch Roku Smart LED TV. You’ll save about $40 off the regular price. The resolution is 720p and 60Hz refresh rate, so it’s ideal as a TV in a second room or children’s room where there’s some streaming going on. TCL also just released the much lauded 6-Series which supports a 4K HDR quality picture.
The Competiton offering their own Prime Day Deals
I’m a big fan of HDHomeRun tuners because you can watch free over-the-air antenna channels all over your home using your smartphone, tablets, PCs and even your TVs that don’t get decent antenna reception. The HDHomeRun Duo is on sale for $69.99 at Best Buy. The Duo is usually priced at $99 — the same price as Amazon right now. I’ve reviewed the HDHomeRun Extend and HDHomeRun Quatro within the last year.
