The Best Way to get a Showtime Free Trial
Showtime has been getting a lot of attention lately, especially since scoring a couple of nominations at the 2018 Golden Globes.
The premium network didn’t take home any of the big prizes. But the debut of The Chi that night certainly showed the popularity of its original programming, taking in 1.68 million viewers. Live pro boxing and Inside the NFL make it a key channel for sports fans too.
So how do you check out Showtime’s award-nominated shows like Twin Peaks: The Return and SMILF without doling out any cash?
Here’s a quick primer of all your options. Remember, the goal here is for you to score a Showtime free trial without having to spend anything. If you want to subscribe after your trial, that’s great. But these days, there are enough players in the streaming game where you shouldn’t have to spend anything in advance.
The standalone Showtime subscription has a free 7-day trial, but can you squeeze some more free programming if you use a different platform?
Right now, fuboTV lets you include Showtime as part of a free 7-day trial of the Premier channel bundle. The fuboTV trial gives you access to all 9 live Showtime channels. With fuboTV, you can live stream Showtime on a streaming device like a Roku, or on your iPhone and Android smartphone.
If you’re an Amazon Prime subscriber, you can also get a free trial of Showtime for a week and only pay $8.99 per month afterwards.
I’ll summarize all your other choices for Showtime free trials below.
Who offers Showtime online?
There are a number of streaming and live TV streaming platforms that offer Showtime as an add-on. These platforms generally vary in price from $15 to $70 per month, depending on which channel bundle or subscription you choose. You will then pay an additional $8 to $11 per month for Showtime. But don’t be fooled. At first glance, the lowest price may appear to be the best, but it’s not when you consider the total cost of the streaming platform that you’re getting it from. Many of these services do not let you try out Showtime during the free trial.
Here’s a breakdown of all streaming platforms that currently offer Showtime as an add-on option.
- Amazon Channels ($8.99 per month)
- CBS All Access ($9 per month)
- DirecTV Now ($8 per month)
- fuboTV ($10.99 per month)
- Hulu/Hulu with Live TV ($9 per month)
- Sling TV ($10 per month)
- PlayStation Vue ($10.99 per month)
- YouTube TV ($11 per month)
How long is Showtime’s free trial?
A free trial of Showtime is going to last a week, so choose wisely in terms of when you start it. I wouldn’t initiate a free trial until I was literally ready to sit down and watch something. You will especially want to do that if you plan on binge watching a season of a favorite show like Billions or Shameless.
Amazon Channels: Cheapest Showtime option for Amazon Prime members
If you’re already paying of Amazon Prime for free shipping, you should be taking advantages of its other perks too. Maybe you’re already enjoying lots of movies, TV shows and original programming as a Prime member. Good for you, if you are.
Offering Showtime for $8.99 per month is another example of a loss leader for Amazon, hoping it will be one of those values that draw you into a Prime subscription. That said, if you don’t already subscribe to Prime for other reasons, then the $8.99 rate isn’t such a great deal. You can check out a free trial of Showtime for 7-days on Amazon Channels.
CBS All Access with Showtime bundle
CBS All Access provides some episodes of the network’s hit shows like The Big Bang Theory for $5.99 per month. The debut of Star Trek: Discovery has been driving up memberships, but some people have been frustrated about the quality of the streams.
CBS owns Showtime, so it wasn’t much of a surprise when the two were offered up as a bundled package for $14.99 per month. CBS All Access has a free 7-day trial, but you won’t be able to add on Showtime during the trial period. You’ll have join CBS All Access first. CBS All Access had gained roughly 1.5 million subscribers last year prior to the launch of Discovery.
DirecTV Now: Watch Showtime online
DirecTV Now is among the most competitive live TV streaming services out there. Subscribers can watch live channels like Showtime either at home on a Roku, or on their iPhone while they’re not at home.
The entry-level bundle gets you 60+ channels for $35 per month. The “Live a Little” bundle has popular networks like A&E, AMC, Animal Planet, Discovery, ESPN, Hallmark Channel, HGTV and Viceland. More than 1 million people have signed up to DirecTV Now. Later this year, the platform is expected to roll out a new cloud DVR service, and 4K streaming.
Adding Showtime only costs $8 per month. DirecTV Now offers a free 7-day trial on any of its four channel bundles, but you will have to subscribe to try out Showtime.
fuboTV: How to watch Showtime for free

fuboTV is a live streaming platform that’s centered on sports channels like FS1, FS2, NFL Network, PAC-12 Network, NBA TV and Big Ten Network. But there are mainstream entertainment channels too. A&E, History, Hallmark Channel, National Geographic and Nat Geo Wild are part of the 80+ channel lineup. You can get free trial of Showtime from Hulu at no extra cost. But recording live TV to Cloud DVR is currently not available for premium networks, according to Hulu. Instead, you can watch most Showtime programs on-demand when shows air live. With just Hulu, Showtime will cost you an additional $8.99 per month.
You can also get it through Hulu with Live TV, which gets you more than 50 channels for $40 per month. Either subscription gets you access to all of Hulu’s on-demand content and Cloud DVR. You can tap into two simultaneous streams.
Sling TV: Showtime free trial with subscription
The cheapest subscription to Sling TV is $20 per month. Showtime is an extra $10 per month. With the Sling Orange plan, you will get about 30 channels including AMC, A&E, ESPN, BBC America, Lifetime and TNT. You can only stream and record one channel at a time. If you’re looking for an inexpensive skinny bundle with Showtime, this is likely your best route. But if your goal is to score a Showtime free trial, you’ll need to be a subscriber to Sling TV first.
Sling TV offers a free 7-day trial.

The entry-level bundle has 48+ channels AMC, BBC America, FX, ESPN and National Geographic. PlayStation Vue has a free 5-day trial, but you need to be a subscriber to check out Showtime.
YouTube TV: Showtime add-on
YouTube TV offers Showtime for an additional $11 per month, but they don’t appear to offer any free trial with the add-on channels. YouTube offers a 40+ channel bundle for $35 per month. CBS, ABC, FS1, FS2, AMC, ESPN and Sundance TV are part of the channel package. If you get a free trial of just YouTube TV, you can try it out for 14-days. You can read over my review of YouTube TV for more details.
