Order a cheaper NVIDIA Shield TV without the gamepad

NVIDIA Shield TV remote only option officially on sale

NVIDIA Shield TV with a remote-only option officially went on sale today.

The $20 price drop was first announced a day before the new Apple TV (with 4K) hit the market. The reduced-priced Shield TV is without a gamepad. But that doesn’t mean that remote-only Shield TV owners have to go without games. There are nearly 20 games that you can play with just a remote

In fact, Jackbox Party Pack 4 is launching tomorrow in the Google Play Store for $24.99. It’s being billed as “the biggest and fourthiest” addition to its storied party-game franchise. It features not five, but five and a half games. Here’s everything else you can play without a NVIDIA Shield TV gamepad.

  • Jackbox Party Pack 3
  • Jackbox Party Pack 2
  • Jackbox Party Pack
  • Alto’s Adventure
  • Riptide GP: Renegade
  • Real Racing 3
  • Crossy Road
  • Mousebot: Escape from CatLab
  • Red Ball 4
  • PAC-MAN 256 – Endless Maze
  • Skeletomb
  • Afterloop
  • Table Top Racing
  • AirAttack 2
  • Epic Heroes War
  • Beach Buggy Racing
  • Riptide GP 2
  • Power Hover

Even without the gamepad, the remote-only model of Shield TV is exactly the same. You get a 4K streamer running on Android TV, expandable storage, an open ecosystem of apps and games, and the power of Google Assistant in the living room.  And, you can always add a gamepad later.

As I said before, reviews for the new Apple TV have been lukewarm all around. The Verge described the Apple TV the same streaming box as the 4th generation with a software update. MacRumors noted that YouTube can only play on 1080p. Techradar said there was no Amazon Video support at launch, and Siri can’t find 4K HDR movies, just 4K ones.

So it will be interested to see how NVIDIA does with its sans-remote approach. The remote-only Shield TV went on sale today at Best Buy.
